Governance

Governance is a vital but often overlooked part of charity life: ensuring Trustees provide leadership, direction and strong oversight.

“I had the pleasure of attending a brilliantly delivered and genuinely informative Trustee Training session with Pete Hawkins. It was engaging, welcoming, and packed with practical insights.”

Natasha M, Operations Manager, TECWomen CIC

  • ‘Introduction to Charity Governance’ training – Trustees often take on the role with limited understanding, this 1-day training bridges that gap. It unpacks the key responsibilities and expectations of being a Trustee, offering practical tools and insights to help Trustees work effectively with fellow board members and staff, building confidence and shared understanding. Face to face delivery fosters the richest interactions and networking opportunities, but it can also be delivered online. Both open sessions (for individuals from various charities) and closed sessions (tailored to a specific group) are available.
  • Governance Reviews - independent governance reviews are recommended every 3–5 years to ensure good practice and strong oversight. As an external expert, I use a range of tools — including benchmarking against the Charity Governance Code — to assess the effectiveness of your governance. The review results in clear, practical recommendations to support ongoing improvement and strengthen this vital function.
  • CIO registration or conversion - historically many charities have been both a registered charity and limited company. I can manage you through conversion to the more streamlined Charitable Incorporate Organisation (CIO), (or initial set up), helping you to save legal and administrative costs and ensuring support tailored to your particular needs.

“A thoroughly useful course at which I both learned and enjoyed.” Cllr Anne Jobson OBE. Chair, Exeter Canal & Quay Trust

“I highly recommend it for anyone that is a newly appointed trustee or a trustee wanting to ensure they are clear on how they can best support the organisation they serve.” Paul B, Trustee, Somerset

“Sometimes lunch is the only good thing on these courses, but this was ALL fabulous.” Stuart B, Trustee, CLEAR Trauma Support
